Cannot Create Initial Index after install of CES

I am trying to install and configure Coveo for Sitecore and I have completed the first step but cannot get any further than that. I installed Coveo Enterprise Search on my local dev machine (Windows 8.1) and selected my Windows account as the CES Service Login.

It is a domain account with local admin privs on my machine. When I try to run the InitialSetup.aspx from the Administration Tool I get the following error:

The access is denied. The initial setup can only be performed by the user who runs the service or a local administrator.

I am logged in as that user when I run the CES Admin tool and I should have the required permissions but I must be missing something.

Which user is running the application pool of the Coveo Administration Tool website in IIS?

It looks like the Admin Tool website is running under the NetworkService account. I did not see anywhere in the CES install/setup where I could change this. I entered the credentials for my Domain Account which has local admin access for this machine. I still have not been able to get this to work…should I manually change the IIS account from NetworkService to my domain account?

This issue will be fixed in the November build.

The root cause is running the Coveo service (and Admin Service) with a username containing uppercase character(s).

The workaround is to create a local user named coveoservice and adding it to the local admin group on the Coveo server. You then select that user to run the Coveo service during the Coveo installation process.

It is really an error coming when the user trying to do the first time setup is not an administrator of the machine.

Can you try with another user?

Or like Carl said, maybe it's not the good user on the IIS App Pool…

I tried running the Admin Website apppool under the same domain user account that I specified in the install. I am still getting the same error. Are there any log files that might help me troubleshoot this problem?

Assuming that NetworkService is the user of the "CESAppPool admin" application pool, you can give access to the "C:\Program Files\Coveo Enterprise Search 7\Web" folder to: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

This will not work if the real identity of you application pool is LocalService or LocalSystem.

Another thing you can try is the set the identity of the "CESAppPool admin" application pool to your domain account which is also an administrator.

I had tried setting the identify of the apppool to my domain account, then I recycled the apppool and tried again but I got the same error

Using Process Monitor, add two filters:

  • Path|begins with|C:\CES7|Include
  • Path|begins with|C:\Program Files\Coveo Enterprise Search 7\Web|Include

This should help you identify where the denied is coming from.

I uninstalled the beta, downloaded Coveo Enterprise Search 7.0 x64 (7028) and reran the install. I tried the Initial Setup and could not create the index…same error. I then switched the apppool to use my domain account instead of NetworkService and still the same error.

I do not see a c:\CES7 folder yet. Does it get created by the install process or the InitialSetup?

I tried the process monitor filters but there was no match on either folder and the c:\CES7 one did not even exist yet.

I am experiencing a similar problem. I have tried the suggested solutions above and none work. After using process monitor i noticed a log file, AdminService.log being created. I'll attach it here.

This one is a consequence of the other. The AdminService is another Coveo Service and tries to reach to CES, but is clearly unable since CES installation fails… we'll look further into what could possibly cause this.

I'm getting a similar issue with a much more modern version. I'm not sure what to do about it, either, since I don't have any control over the users on my machine (due to company security policies).

The issue here has been fixed in Coveo November 2014. If you are using a more recent version, I would say to post a new question with detailed error, or contact Coveo Support Directly.

I had the similar issue. Below fix worked for me.

goto services.msc, open properties of "Coveo Enterprise Search 7 x64", open Log On tab and select Local System Account, check "Allow service to interact with desktop", apply changes and restart the service.

I had a similar problem and was able to resolve by:

  1. Open IIS
  2. Locate the Coveo Admin Site: Coveo Enterprise Search 7 Admin
  3. Modifying Authentication by disabling Windows Authentication and enabling Basic Authentication
  4. Accessing the site and when prompted for username & password entering the credentials of the service account used during install.
