Oops message on multi-word search with parentheses

Coveo for Sitecore 72 3.0 1081

CES 7.0 7711

Search API 8.0.720

When I query against a set of words which includes parentheses and spaces between words, on our search page, I receive the 'Oops! Something went wrong on the server.' The same query works fine directly against the rest service.

Some examples of this are:

(apple) (orange)

apple (orange)

(apple orange)

I found this link but nothing is addressed.

That's weird because those queries are 100% valid query syntax. Is there any custom JS code that might be changing it somehow?

What would help is to know exactly what expressions are sent to the backend once a query is executed. In the Chrome dev tools look in the Console, there is an entry that should appear there for every query. Expand it and look for the q, aq and cq values. Are those the same as what is typed in the query?

Perfect, there was a funky advanced expression throwing off everything.
