query ranking to only affect same document type relative to other documents of same type

In a site with various page types one of which is a product page type, a product can be Active or Discontinued. I want to ensure that active products are listed in search results before the discontinued products. I can add a query ranking rendering with a rule to do this but I want to only affect product pages relative to each other without affecting other page types.

A simple example. I have search results which return a category page, a discontinued product and an active product in that order. If I boost the document score of the active product by checking that field I don't want it to jump ahead of the category page. Is there a way to do that? Product is Coveo for Sitecore enterprise

Hi Paul,

Excellent use case. You can use a negative boost on the discontinued products. This will avoid pushing active products over other kinds of documents while still giving you the expected results.
