Indexing performance - Coveo vs Lucene

Hello,

intending to benchmark and compare the performance of Lucene and Coveo side-by-side, I set up two identical fresh instances of Sitecore 8 and installed Coveo on one of them. However, while the initial rebuild took about the same time on both instances, subsequent rebuilds took about ten times longer on Coveo (30 versus 300 seconds). I also noticed that Coveo takes more items and fields into account. Is this normal behavior or does the "playing field" need to be "leveled" in this case to ensure objectivity?

Thanks in advance.

Additional data:

Current Coveo for Sitecore version: 3.0.1123.0

Current Sitecore version: 8.0.150427

Hi,

The way Coveo and Lucene ingest documents is different. So yes, the number of items and fields is different. Indexing time is also different, Coveo need to process document after Sitecore provides us items in order to extract more information so that your end users can search on them using simple keywords. The fact that documents need to be pushed to an external service also change the game, Lucene runs in process with Sitecore.

The part of your question that worries me is that it seems that subsequent rebuild are longer than the original one. Is it the case? If so, it would be interesting to get some trace from your setup to find out why.

Thanks, Nick
